Do UV lamps need to come into contact with surfaces in order to effectively kill bacteria?

We all know that ultraviolet lamps have a bactericidal effect, so is it necessary to light the object above the time to sterilization? Let's take a look.

The bactericidal effect of ultraviolet (UV) lamps mainly depends on the direct exposure of ultraviolet light to microorganisms. Ultraviolet light can be divided into several different bands, of which the UVC band (wavelength between 200-280 nanometers) is commonly used for disinfection and sterilization because it effectively destroys the DNA or RNA of microorganisms, thus preventing them from replicating.

In order to ensure the effective bactericidal effect of the UV lamp, the following conditions need to be met:

1. Direct exposure: Microorganisms must be exposed to ultraviolet radiation. If an object blocks the light, the area behind the block will not be disinfected.

2. Sufficient dose: The bactericidal effect depends on the intensity and exposure time of ultraviolet light. It must be ensured that the microbe receives a dose of UV light sufficient to inactivate it.

3. Appropriate wavelength: Different wavelengths of ultraviolet light have different effects on microorganisms, and UVC band is the most effective.

4. Cleanliness: The cleanliness of the irradiated surface will also affect the bactericidal effect. Dirt, dust, or other pollutants may absorb some of the UV light, reducing its efficiency.

Therefore, when using UV lamps for disinfection, it is very important to ensure that the light can be directly and fully illuminated to the target area.
