Does ultraviolet light produce ozone?

Ultraviolet light does produce ozone at certain wavelengths, but not all ultraviolet light produces ozone. The formation of ozone is mainly related to the wavelength of ultraviolet light. Here's the explanation:

Ultraviolet classification and ozone generation

UVA (320-400 nm)

1. Characteristics: longest wavelength, strongest penetration, able to penetrate glass and atmosphere.

2. Ozone generation: No ozone generation.

UVB (280-320 nm)

1. Characteristics: Medium wavelength, partly absorbed by the atmosphere.

2. Ozone generation: A small amount of ozone may be produced at high concentrations, but is usually not significant.

UVC (200-280 nm)

1. Characteristics: Short wavelength, strong bactericidal effect, but poor penetration, most of them are absorbed by the atmosphere.

2. Ozone generation: The shorter wavelength portion of UVC (especially wavelengths close to 200 nm) may produce ozone.

3 Application: The 254 nm wavelength UVC lamp, which is usually used for germicidal lamps, produces very little ozone, almost none.

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 100-200 nm)

1. Characteristics: The shortest wavelength, completely absorbed by air, can only exist in vacuum or specific gas environment.

2. Ozone generation: Ozone is significantly produced because these wavelengths are able to break down oxygen molecules in the air (O2) to form ozone (O).

Specific applications and ozone generation

*UVC germicidal lamp: Usually use a wavelength of 254 nm UVC lamp, this wavelength in the sterilization effect is significant at the same time, less ozone generation. Therefore, most commercial UVC germicidal lamps are designed to minimize ozone production.

*VUV lamp: The use of a VUV lamp with a wavelength of 185 nm produces significant ozone and is suitable for industrial applications requiring strong oxidation capacity.

conclusion

UVC LED (wavelength about 275 nm) lamp: UVC leds of this wavelength produce almost no ozone because they are not powerful enough to break down oxygen molecules.

Low pressure mercury lamps: These lamps usually contain ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 185 nm, so they do produce ozone.

Specific design of UV lamps: If UV lamp beads are designed to emit UV light at a wavelength of 185 nm, they produce ozone. Other UV beads: For UV beads of other wavelengths, especially those that do not emit the 185 nm wavelength, they do not produce ozone.

Therefore, whether ozone is produced depends on the specific wavelength of ultraviolet light and the application design. For ordinary UVC germicidal lamps, their ozone generation is limited and will not cause significant environmental impact. However, if a specific wavelength of ultraviolet lamp is used (such as 185 nm), more ozone will be produced. If you are using a UVC LED with a wavelength greater than 243 nm, it is unlikely to produce ozone. When using UV beads, especially when used in enclosed Spaces, this should be taken into account and appropriate ventilation measures should be taken.
