Which bacteria and viruses can be killed by ultraviolet light

Ultraviolet light, especially in the UVC band (200-280nm), is effective in killing a wide range of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. UVC disinfects and sterilizes microorganisms by destroying their DNA or RNA, preventing them from replicating and surviving. Here are some common bacteria and viruses, and the effects of ultraviolet light on them:

1. Bacteria

· Escherichia coli: A common pathogen found in contaminated water and food, UV rays are effective in killing it and preventing foodborne illness.

· Staphylococcus aureus: including the more resistant MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), UVC can effectively kill these common hospital bacteria.

· Salmonella: One of the bacteria that causes food poisoning, found in eggs, meat and vegetables, which ultraviolet light can destroy by damaging its DNA.

· Helicobacter pylori: A bacteria that causes stomach ulcers and stomach cancer, UVC can kill this bacteria on the surface, reducing the risk of infection.

· Streptococcus pneumoniae: causes pneumonia, meningitis and other diseases, ultraviolet light has obvious killing effect on it.

· Listeria monocytogenes: a common bacteria in food processing, can cause serious food poisoning, UVC is an effective disinfection means.

· Mycobacterium tuberculosis: The bacterium that causes tuberculosis, and UVC is effective at suppressing and killing it.

2. Viruses

· Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) : Studies have shown that UVC light can effectively inactivate the novel coronavirus in air, surfaces or liquids, reducing the risk of transmission.

· Influenza virus: including seasonal influenza viruses, UVC can destroy the RNA of the virus, reducing transmission.

· Hepatitis B virus: By destroying the DNA of the virus, UVC is effective in killing the hepatitis B virus during surface disinfection.

·HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) : Although HIV is transmitted primarily through bodily fluids, UVC is effective at destroying the virus when it is used to disinfect medical devices and blood products.

· Norovirus: One of the common viruses that cause gastroenteritis, UVC is effective in eliminating norovirus present in the air or on surfaces.

· Adenovirus: Common viruses that cause respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Ultraviolet rays disrupt their genetic material and prevent their transmission.

· Rotavirus: Common cause of infant gastroenteritis, UVC can effectively kill this virus, prevent infection.

3. Fungi and mold

· Aspergillus niger: Commonly found in the air, UVC can destroy its spores, inhibiting its growth and spread.

· Saccharomyces cerevisiae: UVC can effectively control the spread of this fungus in food processing and reduce food spoilage.

4. Protozoa

· Giardia lamblia: This protozoan can cause intestinal infections, and UVC is effective at destroying its DNA.

· Cryptosporidium parvum: A common pathogen in drinking water, UVC can be used in the water treatment process to kill this protozoa.

Influencing factors of bactericidal effect

While UV has a significant killing effect on most pathogens, its effectiveness is also affected by the following factors:

· Irradiation time: the bactericidal effect of ultraviolet light is proportional to the irradiation time, the longer the irradiation time, the better the bactericidal effect.

· UV intensity: Higher UVC light intensity is more effective at killing pathogens.

· Distance: The intensity of UV decreases with the increase of distance, and the closer the distance between the bactericidal object and the light source, the better the effect.

· Light penetration: UVC does not penetrate opaque objects effectively, so the bactericidal effect is limited to the illuminated surface.

conclusion

Ultraviolet light (especially the UVC band) is an efficient, broad-spectrum sterilization technology that can effectively kill a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. It has a wide range of applications, including air disinfection, water treatment, surface disinfection, and sterilization in medical and food processing.
